2026 GMC Sierra EV Drops Planned Digital Key Feature

The 2026 GMC Sierra EV is still arriving with impressive range, performance, and charging technology, but one previously expected convenience feature will not make it to the production truck.

GMC had planned to introduce smartphone-based Digital Key functionality through a future over-the-air software update. The feature would have allowed owners to use a compatible phone or smartwatch to unlock, start, and operate the electric pickup.

That plan has now changed.

Instead of Digital Key, the 2026 Sierra EV will use a physical Key Card system as an alternative to the traditional key fob.

What Digital Key Was Supposed to Offer

Digital Key was designed to turn a compatible mobile device into a vehicle key.

Once activated, the system was expected to let Sierra EV owners:

  • Unlock the truck as they approached
  • Lock the truck when walking away
  • Start the vehicle without carrying a traditional key fob
  • Access remote lock, unlock, and start functions
  • Manage vehicle access through GM's mobile ecosystem

Phone-based access has become increasingly common across the EV market. Tesla and Rivian have helped make the smartphone-as-a-key experience familiar, while several luxury automakers now offer similar technology.

For a modern electric pickup positioned around advanced technology, Digital Key would have been a logical addition.

What Sierra EV Owners Get Instead

The 2026 Sierra EV will instead rely on a Key Card.

According to GMC, owners can tap the card at the vehicle's designated reader to lock or unlock the truck. After unlocking it, the driver has two minutes to start the vehicle before the authorization window expires.

If the timer runs out, the card must be tapped again.

GMC says:

  • One activated Key Card is included with the vehicle
  • Owners can purchase up to seven additional cards through a dealer
  • Lost cards can be deactivated
  • The Key Card does not completely replace the traditional key fob

The system still provides a useful backup, but it is not as seamless as using a phone that most drivers already carry every day.

Why Removing Digital Key Matters

Digital Key is not the Sierra EV's most important feature, but its removal is still notable.

Electric vehicles are increasingly evaluated as much by their software experience as by their range, performance, or charging speed. Buyers now expect reliable mobile apps, connected services, remote controls, and convenient phone integration.

Removing a previously planned feature before launch could therefore affect how some customers view the Sierra EV's technology package, particularly when comparing it with other premium electric pickups.

The change also demonstrates how difficult it can be for automakers to deliver connected-vehicle features consistently across new platforms.

The Sierra EV Still Has Serious Hardware

Despite losing Digital Key, the 2026 Sierra EV remains one of the most capable electric pickups entering the U.S. market.

Specification 2026 GMC Sierra EV
Starting Price $62,400
Maximum Estimated Range Up to 478 miles
Maximum Output Up to 760 horsepower
Maximum Torque Up to 785 lb-ft
Charging Architecture 800 volts
DC Fast-Charging Gain Approximately 116 miles in 10 minutes

Range and performance vary by battery, trim, and configuration. The 478-mile figure applies to eligible Max Range configurations rather than every Sierra EV.

The truck also offers available features such as Super Cruise, four-wheel steering with CrabWalk, the MultiPro MidGate, and bidirectional energy capabilities.

The 2026 Lineup Is Expanding

The Sierra EV is no longer limited to a single premium-focused configuration.

For 2026, GMC has expanded the lineup to include:

  • Elevation
  • AT4
  • Denali

The Elevation provides a more accessible entry point into the Sierra EV range. The AT4 adds off-road-focused equipment, while the Denali remains the most luxurious version.

Earlier product information suggested that Digital Key would eventually become available across this broader lineup. Its removal is therefore relevant to buyers at multiple price points rather than only those considering the Denali.

Convenience Is Becoming Part of EV Competition

Range, charging speed, and horsepower remain critical, but they are no longer the only factors separating electric vehicles.

Drivers increasingly expect:

  • Seamless smartphone integration
  • Reliable connected services
  • Remote vehicle controls
  • Over-the-air improvements
  • Simple digital access
  • Consistent software performance

A missing convenience feature may not change the Sierra EV's fundamental capability, but it can influence the overall ownership experience.

That matters in an electric pickup segment where buyers can also consider vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and Tesla Cybertruck.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 GMC Sierra EV remains an important electric pickup for General Motors.

It offers serious range, strong performance, fast charging, and a wider selection of trims than before. However, replacing the planned Digital Key feature with a physical Key Card shows that connected vehicle technology does not always arrive as originally promised.

For most buyers, this change probably will not be a dealbreaker.

But it highlights an important shift in the EV market: customers are no longer evaluating electric vehicles only by battery capacity and horsepower. Software quality, mobile integration, and everyday convenience are now part of the purchase decision.
