2027 Volvo EX60 Costs Less Than Plug-In Hybrid XC60

Volvo is doing something that still feels unusual in today’s EV market:

It’s pricing its new electric SUV below the plug-in hybrid version.

The all-new 2027 Volvo EX60, Volvo’s upcoming midsize electric SUV, is expected to start at a lower price point than the current plug-in hybrid XC60 in several markets. That’s a notable shift at a time when EVs still typically cost more than their hybrid equivalents.

And honestly, Volvo seems to know exactly why this matters.

Volvo Is Trying To Remove One Of EVs’ Biggest Problems

For years, one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption has been simple:

👉 price

Even buyers interested in going electric often ended up choosing hybrids because the cost difference was too large to justify.

The EX60 changes that equation.

According to Reuters, Volvo intentionally priced the EX60 “similarly” or slightly below the XC60 plug-in hybrid in Europe. In Germany, the EX60 starts around €62,990, undercutting comparable XC60 PHEV configurations.

Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson reportedly said the company believes EVs and hybrids need to reach pricing parity for adoption to scale faster.

That’s a pretty important statement coming from a luxury automaker.

The EX60 Is One Of Volvo’s Most Important EVs Yet

The EX60 sits in a critical position for Volvo.

It’s essentially the electric replacement for the XC60, which has been one of Volvo’s best-selling vehicles globally for years.

That means this isn’t a niche EV experiment.

This is Volvo trying to electrify one of its core products.

The EX60 is built on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform, which introduces major upgrades in:

  • Battery efficiency
  • Charging speed
  • Software integration
  • Manufacturing cost reduction

Volvo also says SPA3 uses technologies like:

  • Cell-to-body battery integration
  • Megacasting production methods

to reduce complexity and improve efficiency.

Range And Charging Look Competitive

Depending on the trim, the EX60 will offer:

Model Estimated Range Power
EX60 P6 ~307 miles 369 hp
EX60 P10 ~322 miles 503 hp
EX60 P12 Up to 400 miles 670 hp

Charging is another major focus.

Volvo says the EX60 can charge from 10% to 80% in around 18–19 minutes under ideal conditions using ultra-fast charging.

That would make it one of Volvo’s fastest-charging EVs so far.

Volvo Is Taking A Different Approach Than Some Rivals

What makes the EX60 interesting is that Volvo isn’t positioning it as an ultra-luxury flagship.

Instead, the company seems focused on making EV ownership feel more normal and practical.

That includes:

  • Familiar SUV sizing
  • Scandinavian interior design
  • Real family usability
  • Pricing close to hybrid alternatives

In other words, Volvo appears less interested in chasing extreme performance headlines and more focused on convincing mainstream luxury buyers to finally switch to EVs.

And based on early demand, that strategy may already be working.

Reuters reported that Volvo says EX60 demand has already exceeded internal expectations ahead of launch.

The XC60 Problem Volvo Needed To Solve

Ironically, the XC60 plug-in hybrid has been one of Volvo’s biggest success stories.

The vehicle offers:

  • Strong fuel economy
  • Around 35 miles of electric-only driving
  • 455 horsepower in T8 form
  • Familiar gasoline backup convenience

That made it difficult for Volvo EVs to fully replace it.

But if the fully electric EX60 costs roughly the same, or even less, the argument for staying with a plug-in hybrid becomes weaker.

Especially when the EV version offers:

👉 more range

👉 faster charging

👉 lower running costs

👉 no gasoline at all

Final Thoughts

The EX60 may end up becoming one of Volvo’s most important vehicles of the decade.

Not because it’s the fastest or most extreme EV.

But because Volvo is finally addressing one of the biggest real-world EV concerns:

👉 affordability relative to hybrids

If buyers can get a fully electric luxury SUV for the same money, or less, than a plug-in hybrid alternative, the market starts to change very quickly.

And Volvo seems determined to push that transition forward.
