Volvo Will Replace the Canceled EX30 With a New Affordable EV

Volvo may be discontinuing the EX30 in the United States, but the company is not giving up on affordable EVs.

In fact, Volvo is already preparing a replacement.

During a recent media roundtable tied to the U.S. launch of the new EX60, Volvo executives confirmed that a new entry-level electric vehicle is currently in development and expected to arrive around 2027. The upcoming model is expected to replace the canceled EX30 in the American market while targeting a similar price range and customer base.

That matters because the EX30 was supposed to be one of Volvo’s most important EVs.

The EX30 Never Fully Delivered On Its Original Promise

When Volvo first revealed the EX30, the idea was simple:

👉 a smaller, affordable Volvo EV starting under $35,000

At the time, that pricing made the EX30 one of the most interesting electric vehicles in the market.

But things changed quickly.

Tariffs on imported EVs, shifting federal tax incentives, and rising costs pushed the EX30’s U.S. pricing much higher than originally expected. By the time the vehicle fully arrived in the American market, the starting price had climbed above $40,000.

And despite strong global interest, Volvo ultimately confirmed that the EX30 and EX30 Cross Country would leave the U.S. after the 2026 model year.

Volvo Still Sees Demand For Affordable EVs

What’s interesting is that Volvo does not appear to view the EX30 cancellation as a failure of the affordable EV idea itself.

Instead, executives suggested the issue was more about economics and market conditions in the U.S.

According to Volvo Cars America President Luis Rezende, the new EV replacement will occupy a “very similar” role in the lineup.

That likely means:

  • Compact size
  • Lower entry pricing
  • Urban-focused practicality
  • Younger EV buyers

Volvo also hinted that the future model may offer more interior space and improved drivability compared to the EX30.

The Timing Makes Sense

The affordable EV market is becoming increasingly important again.

For the last few years, much of the EV industry focused heavily on premium SUVs and high-performance models. But recently, consumer priorities have started shifting toward:

  • Affordability
  • Efficiency
  • Lower ownership costs
  • Practical daily usability

That’s exactly the segment the EX30 was targeting.

And despite its short U.S. lifespan, the vehicle actually received strong reviews for:

  • Scandinavian-inspired design
  • Strong efficiency
  • Compact city-friendly size
  • Surprisingly quick acceleration

The problem was never really the product itself.

It was pricing and market timing.

Volvo’s EV Strategy Is Evolving

Volvo’s broader EV lineup is also changing rapidly.

The company is currently expanding with models like:

  • EX60
  • EX90
  • Updated EX40

while preparing next-generation EV architectures designed around:

  • Faster charging
  • Improved efficiency
  • Lower manufacturing costs

At the same time, Volvo has become more flexible about how quickly it transitions away from combustion and hybrid vehicles.

Instead of forcing a fully electric lineup immediately, the company now appears more focused on balancing:

👉 EV growth

👉 profitability

👉 real-world consumer demand

Why This Matters

Affordable EVs remain one of the biggest missing pieces in the U.S. market.

There are plenty of luxury electric SUVs now.

But there are still very few compelling premium EVs around the $35,000–$45,000 range.

That’s exactly where Volvo wants to compete again.

And honestly, the company probably needs a vehicle like this.

The EX30 brought younger buyers into Volvo showrooms and helped modernize the brand’s image. Replacing it quickly with another affordable EV suggests Volvo understands how important that entry-level segment really is.

Final Thoughts

The EX30’s cancellation in the U.S. may have looked like Volvo stepping back from affordable EVs.

But it now looks more like a reset.

Volvo is already preparing a new electric model aimed at the same market — hopefully with pricing, production, and market conditions that make more sense this time around.

Because if automakers truly want EV adoption to grow, affordable models still matter more than almost anything else.
