Ford is setting an unusually ambitious target for its next electric truck.
According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, Ford wants its upcoming affordable electric pickup, officially named the Ford Fathom, to sell more than 100,000 units during its first year.
Reaching that volume would put the Fathom among America’s best-selling electric vehicles and could make it the first non-Tesla EV nameplate to cross the 100,000-unit mark in a single U.S. sales year.
That makes Ford’s goal about much more than launching another electric pickup. The company is trying to prove that a traditional automaker can turn an affordable EV into a genuine mainstream product.
A Sub-$30,000 Electric Truck for Mainstream Buyers
The Ford Fathom will be the first vehicle built on the company’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform.
Ford has confirmed that the Fathom will be a midsize electric pickup with four doors, seating for five adults and a standard-range battery. It is scheduled to reach customers in 2027, with preorders expected to open earlier in the year.
The truck has a starting price of $28,350 before destination and delivery charges. Including the currently announced destination charge, the entry-level price is expected to remain just below $30,000.
That price is one of the most important parts of the Fathom story.
Most electric trucks sold in the United States have been large, expensive and positioned toward premium buyers. Those improvements matter because affordable EVs are not only a vehicle-pricing challenge. They are fundamentally a manufacturing challenge.
If Ford cannot build the Fathom efficiently and at scale, maintaining its sub-$30,000 price will become much more difficult.
A Smaller Battery With Smarter Efficiency
Ford is also trying to avoid relying on an oversized and expensive battery pack.
The company’s affordable EV engineering team has focused on aerodynamics, weight reduction, thermal management and energy efficiency to deliver practical driving range using fewer battery cells.
The Fathom will use an LFP battery pack. Lithium iron phosphate chemistry can help reduce cost while offering strong durability and cycle life, although it typically stores less energy by weight than some nickel-based battery chemistries.
Ford has discussed targeting driving range that meets mainstream customer expectations, but the company has not finalized every range specification for the production truck. Entry-level versions may offer less than 300 miles per charge.
That could still be sufficient for the vehicle’s intended market. An affordable electric pickup does not need to win every specification comparison. It needs to provide useful range, practical cargo capacity, dependable charging and a price that mainstream buyers can reach.
More Interior Space Than a Toyota RAV4
Although the Fathom is described as a midsize pickup, Ford says it will offer more passenger volume than a 2025 Toyota RAV4.

Ford is now attempting something similar in a different segment.
The Fathom does not need to copy a Tesla. It needs to make an electric pickup affordable and practical enough that buyers no longer view the electric powertrain as a compromise.
