Polestar has revealed the full carbon footprint of the upcoming Polestar 5, continuing its transparency push in EV manufacturing emissions reporting.
The Swedish EV brand reports a cradle-to-gate footprint of 23.8 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e), covering emissions from raw material extraction to production and delivery.
Polestar 5 Carbon Footprint Breakdown
According to Polestar’s life cycle assessment (LCA), the reported footprint includes emissions from:
- Raw material extraction
- Materials processing
- Vehicle manufacturing
- Logistics and delivery to customers
Polestar says this reporting expansion makes it the first automaker to publish LCAs across its full vehicle lineup.
Aluminum Strategy and Emissions Reduction
Aluminum is typically one of the most carbon-intensive vehicle materials. Polestar says it reduced impact by increasing recycled and renewable-powered aluminum sourcing:
- 13% of aluminum is recycled
- 83% comes from smelters powered by renewable electricity
The company states this approach avoids roughly 14 tons of CO2 per vehicle versus traditional aluminum sourcing pathways.
Renewable Energy and Lower-Impact Materials
Polestar says renewable electricity is used across key production steps, including battery-related facilities. The brand also highlights lower-impact interior materials, such as flax-based natural fiber composites developed with Bcomp, plus recycled cabin materials like Econyl and PET-based textiles.
The front trunk is described as mono-material recycled PET, intended to improve end-of-life recyclability.
Polestar 5 Performance and Charging
Despite the sustainability focus, Polestar 5 remains a high-performance electric GT. Reported highlights include:
- Up to 650 kW (884 hp)
- 664 lb-ft torque
- Estimated 678 km WLTP range
- 800V architecture with up to 350 kW fast charging
- 10% to 80% charging in around 22 minutes (optimal conditions)
Why This Matters
Publishing measurable manufacturing emissions data helps shift EV conversations beyond tailpipe emissions and toward full production impact. This kind of transparency can push suppliers and automakers toward lower-carbon materials and cleaner manufacturing methods.
