Rivian Sets June 9, 2026 for First R2 Customer Deliveries

Rivian has finally put a date on one of the most important launches in the company’s history.

The EV maker confirmed that June 9, 2026 will mark the beginning of first customer deliveries of the Rivian R2, while order invitations and public demo drives also begin the same day.

For Rivian, this is much bigger than the launch of another vehicle.

The R2 is widely viewed as the model that could determine whether Rivian successfully transitions from a premium niche EV brand into a true mass-market automaker.

June 9 Marks Three Major Milestones

Rivian is not taking a slow rollout approach here.

Instead, the company is combining several major steps into a single launch date:

  • First customer deliveries begin
  • Order invitations start going out
  • Public demo drives open at Rivian Spaces across the U.S.

According to launch details, invitations will be sent in rolling batches, with reservation timing and customer location expected to play major roles in delivery priority.

Buyers located near Rivian Service and Demo Centers are likely to receive invitations earlier during the first phase of the production ramp.

Why The R2 Matters So Much

The R2 is designed to reach a much larger audience than Rivian’s current R1T and R1S lineup.

While the R1 vehicles helped establish the brand, their pricing kept them firmly in the premium segment. The R2 changes that strategy.

Rivian originally introduced the R2 with a target starting price around $45,000, but the first versions launching now start closer to $57,990.

More affordable trims are expected to follow in late 2026 and 2027.

That puts the R2 directly into competition with vehicles like:

  • Tesla Model Y
  • Hyundai IONIQ 5
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • Chevrolet Equinox EV

Rivian Is Betting Big On Production Growth

Production of the R2 began earlier this year at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois plant, where the company has been expanding manufacturing capacity to support higher-volume output.

Rivian executives have repeatedly described the R2 as a critical step toward profitability.

The company expects the new platform to cost significantly less to build than the R1 lineup thanks to:

  • Simplified vehicle architecture
  • New drive units
  • Large-scale castings
  • Reduced manufacturing complexity

If Rivian can ramp this vehicle successfully, the R2 could become the company’s first true mainstream volume product.

What Buyers Can Expect First

The first vehicles going out to customers will be the R2 Performance Launch Package.

That version includes:

  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive
  • Up to 656 horsepower
  • Around 330 miles of estimated range
  • Rivian’s Autonomy+ hardware and software package
  • NACS charging support for Tesla Superchargers

Customers can already begin preparing configurations by choosing colors, wheels, interior themes, and options ahead of receiving an order invitation.

Once an order is confirmed, early delivery timing is expected to fall within roughly two to six weeks.

The Most Important Launch In Rivian’s History?

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has previously described the R2 as “maybe the most important thing we’ve launched to date.”

That is hard to argue with.

The R1T and R1S proved Rivian could build desirable electric vehicles.

But the R2 is the product that could move the company into a completely different scale of business.

Final Thoughts

June 9 is more than a delivery date.

It marks the beginning of Rivian’s next chapter.

The company has spent years building its identity around premium adventure-focused EVs. Now it is preparing to compete in one of the most important parts of the market: midsize electric SUVs with broader appeal.

The R2 has already generated serious interest.

The next challenge is turning that interest into real deliveries, real volume, and eventually, sustainable profitability.
