Tesla continues to expand the global Model Y lineup with the new Model Y L, now heading to Australia and New Zealand as a more spacious, family-focused version of the popular electric SUV.
The longer-wheelbase variant adds more cabin room, a six-seat layout, and a longer driving range, giving buyers a more practical option than the standard five-seat Model Y.
A Longer Wheelbase for More Interior Space
The Model Y L is roughly 7 inches (about 18 cm) longer than the standard Model Y, with most of that increase coming from an extended wheelbase. That additional length is designed to improve passenger comfort and make the third row more usable.
Key interior highlights include:
- Three-row configuration with six seats
- More legroom and headroom for second-row passengers
- A more practical third row than the optional seven-seat setup in the standard Model Y
- Heated and ventilated seating in multiple rows
Visually, the Model Y L stays close to the regular Model Y, but the stretched body and revised roofline help create a more spacious cabin.
Longer Range and Family-Focused Practicality
Tesla lists the Model Y L with an estimated 681 km WLTP range, which is significantly higher than the roughly 600 km WLTP range reported for the regular Model Y sold in the same markets.
The extra range is likely supported by a larger battery pack enabled by the longer wheelbase and packaging changes.
Reported performance figures include:
- 0-100 km/h: about 5.0 seconds
- Top speed: 201 km/h
- Drivetrain: Dual-motor all-wheel drive
- Range: 681 km (WLTP)
While it is not positioned as the quickest Model Y variant, the Model Y L offers a strong balance of everyday usability, range, and interior flexibility.
Pricing and Availability
Current reported starting prices are:
- Australia: AU$74,900
- New Zealand: NZ$83,900
Deliveries are expected to begin in Q2 2026.
Why the Model Y L Matters
The Model Y L fills an important gap in Tesla’s global lineup. It offers more passenger space than the standard Model Y without requiring buyers to step up to a larger and more expensive full-size EV SUV.
That makes it particularly relevant for families who want electric efficiency, a useful third row, and long-range capability in one package.
As demand for practical, family-friendly electric SUVs continues to grow, variants like the Model Y L show how automakers are tailoring EV lineups for different markets and buyer needs.
